Sony SLT A77

At first when you pick up the A77, the immediate reaction is, that this is a big and heavy camera. The body of the camera itself is about 700gms add the 15-105mm lens and you get a 1.4 KG shooter. The camera is solid and weather sealed, thanks to the robust Magnesium alloy body. The ergonomics are brilliant and we preferred carrying the camera without a strap since the front grip of the body is nice and rubberized making for brilliant handheld use.
On the inside is where it all happens, instead of a traditional flapping mirror, Sony has instead used a translucent mirror. The fixed mirror sits in front of the 24.2 MP Exmor APS CMOS sensor and allows only 2/3 of the light on the sensor. The rest is bounced off to a 2.1 Million dot OLED viewfinder.  The top of the camera has a monochrome LCD, along with controls for ISO, white balance, exposure, and a viewfinder / LCD toggle. There are scroll wheels at the front and rear for your right index finger and thumb, and a very convenient power switch ring on the shutter button.
Controls are aplenty for those who like setups, a button for AE lock, display options. The left of the camera has microphone input, Mini USB and Mini HDMI ports, a PC Sync socket for connecting external lights, a remote control port, and an AC adapter jack. The camera also accepts SD/SDXC or Sony’s MemoryStick duo cards, rather than the usual CF.

Features and Controls

If you are looking for filters on a camera then, you probably need to look in the lower region of the price bracket, a pro shooter like the A77 usually does not carry those. But there is this camera that does HDR, Toy Camera and Miniature, plus a few filters like Vivid and Monochrome. Apart from the multiple face detect, it also has Smile-Shutter and a sweep panorama. You also have selectable 19 AF points and full manual focus guide. The camera body also has an orientation sensor that ensures that the camera is flat with the ground and performs like a bubble meter. We would have rather had a gyro/accelerometer that would have told us that our camera is straight even when looking up or down away from the flat surface.
A full bevy of manual controls along with selectable/dedicated buttons makes the use of the camera simple yet professional. The easy to navigate menu and the robust mode dial are simple enough for a novice user, and advanced enough for the pro-user.
The inbuilt GPS chip, which lets you geotag your photos and then plot them on a map using iPhoto, Picasa, etc is also wonderful, it does drain an awful lot of battery though. The GPS was also about 50-100m off the exact target. But works none the less

Lenses, Viewfinder and Display

The lens we got with the camera was a 15-105mm lens, but there are over 90 lenses available for Sony’s alpha mount and several adapters to allow mounting of Canon and Nikon lenses (Sans Autofocus) and more third party lenses from Sigma, Tamaron and the likes. The lenses are heavy duty and built to last, they do have excellent glass allowing for, dare i say, “crispy” images and wonderful low light performance. The lenses are also relatively cheaper than the lenses of say – Canon or Nikon, because Sony lenses don’t have Image stabilisation. That feature is inbuilt into the camera and works wonderfully well, not only allowing for great handheld video but also, impressive low light performance

The electronic viewfinder is the point of controversy, where some debate that nothing can be better that a optical viewfinder, I personally prefer the OLED viewfinder. My reason is simple, due to the display-esque nature of the viewfinder, a lot more information is available to the user. The ability to preview the image in the viewfinder is even better, so now without pulling out of the camera looking at the LCD and then taking another picture, one can click a picture, preview it within the viewfinder and move on.

But here lies another issue, if you are in single frame shot mode, then each click will show a preview before you click another, hence delaying the ability to click photographs in a scenario where you know your shots are good. You can press the button halfway through the preview, but its still not as fast as it would be on an optical finder. So, consider yourself pre-warned.
The LCD is filled by 921,600 dots, and has the wonderful TruBlack technology, so black infact that it mingles with the accuracy of photos adding contrast on the LCD. It’s viewable in sunlight, but still a little off. The LCD also attracts a lot if dust and grime, fingerprints and face oils so a wonderful screen protector will do wonders. if you cant find one you can always cut a Mobile phone screen protector and make your own DIY project. Although a 3 inch size should be easy to find.
The LCD is flippilty and Floppity! Okay, it has a 3 hinge mechanism (happy?)  and allows viewabilty for the camera with any possible angle, even forward. One issue arises here aswell, since the screen can face forward either from below or above the camera, in a situation where one has say a Microphone on top and and the A77 is placed on a tripod, it is practically impossible to view the LCD. In this situation a Canon Style flip-out to the side LCD wins by leaps and bounds.

Interface

The Simple interface is easy to go through, the best part is that its a single menu system that you navigate with the joystick. In Manual and Semi-Manual modes the Fn button allows for customizations of settings such as ISO levels, Shutter Speed and Aperture Size.
The menu is very easy to understand and customise, but is a little slow, the whole camera interface suffers from old man syndrome. Turn on the camera and the monochromatic LCD takes about 3 seconds, click the menu button and there is a simple pause for about a second or two.
We also definitely agree with the proximity sensor issue, that we also highlighted in the video. Though the ability to shift to a full time Viewfinder display is there, its not the best solution. Shifting from the LCD to the Viewfinder, a simple proximity sensor turns off the LCD and turns on the Viewfinder, the lag is sometimes so much, that those precious seconds can make or break your shot.

Performance and Image Quality

Step aside people the A77 has arrived! Remove any and all doubts about the translucent mirror and the 1/3 light loss. The camera uses the same 24.3-megapixel APS-C seen in NEX cameras and possibly Nikon cameras aswell. Colors are accurate and clear, and images are sharp and clean.
White balance problems occur indoors where everything seems a little warmer on the camera, but is easily fixed by selecting indoor on WB settings. The camera is stunningly sharp thanks to the impressive in-body IS that allows for images to be crisp even with shaky hands, even at night.

Low light performance, as mentioned many times, is impeccable. The camera shoots at ISO 24600 with boost, but we don’t recommend that. Images are Noise free till about ISO 800 and then you start to see grain in the images. 1600-3200 is still usable, but beyond that will bring you to the stone ages. By default the A77 will only go up to ISO 1600 in Auto mode, but you can set it to go as high as ISO 12,800 through the menu.

Although there is no real need for a 24.3 MP sensor, the large image size, and the crisp images allow for a 100% crop without any loss of detail. Images when shooting in RAW+ JPEG will take up almost 40-60 MB of space an will slow you down if you don’t have a high capacity and high speed card.
The A77 can shoot 12 full-resolution frames per second, and captures about 20 frames in two seconds before slowing down to allow a Class 10 standard card to buffer, get a faster card and possibly have limitless shooting. The best feature of the camera is now demonstrated, even at high fps, image sharpness and focus is in place. Out of the many continous images you will capture, rarely you will find flaws with it. Making it a semi-studio owners pride and joy.

Video Features.

SLR video is a big thing nowadays and Sony didn’t want to be left out, since video is their thing. Sony not only added Video but did something to set a benchmark for other companies. The SLT a77 focuses so brilliantly in Video mode that it almost performs as good as a professional broadcast camera with auto focus. The ability to capture 1080p video at 60p makes for fun video and playback at high speed or double the frame rate. Other formats include 1440 x 1080 @ 30fps, 640 x 424 @ 30fps, and 1080p @ 24fps.
The ability to add an external microphone and a headphone out for monitoring make for a wonderful excuse to buy this camera, which offers exceptional – shallow depth of field – video.

Conclusion

The A77 is the only camera, that  not only lives up to expectations, but out performs them. Roughly a lac (about $2000) for the bundle sets it at a semi pro price point, but as a 1 Lac rupee camera it does a lot more.  Brilliant photography is just one element. Video features that wow, fast autofocus, weather sealed body and brilliant in-body image stabilisation just to name a few other. The camera does come with its own set of defects, including the laggy interface and the controversial viewfinder. What adds to the pie is the slow LCD to Viewfinder switch time and honestly the lack of a touchscreen (call me simple, but  a touchscreen would have improved video performance ten folds).

Next up, we ran AnTuTu Benchmarks on the Galaxy S4 and the smartphone managed to better it’s competitors here as well, as it scored 34546 points, which is better than HTC One’s score of 25064 points.

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Samsung Galaxy S4 HTC One

ANTUTU 34546 28431 25064

Apple Releases iOS 7.0.2 Update To Fix Lock Screen Bug

Apple has started to roll out iOS 7.0.2  to fix a lock screen security bug which was discovered just the very next day when iOS 7 was available for the general masses.
Apple says iOS 7.0.2 will fix the issue where users could bypass an iPhone lock screen to gain access to personal information like photos, email, text messages, Facebook, Flickr, and Twitter accounts. It seems iOS 7.0.2 is a basic security update, however, Apple also said that the new update will also include a Greek keyboard option for passcode entry.
A NULL dereference existed in the lock screen which would cause it to restart if the emergency call button was tapped repeatedly. While the lock screen was restarting, the call dialler could not get the lock screen state and assumed the device was unlocked, and so allowed non-emergency numbers to be dialed. This issue was addressed by avoiding the NULL dereference,” said Apple.

Samsung Galaxy S4 now Available in Gold Brown and Gold Pink

While, it is not sure if theses colors would be available globally. Earlier this month we heard rumors of the Gold HTC one coming up, undoubtedly gold seems to be the new trend.

Google To Pay €300,000 Fine for Privacy Violations to a French Agency

France’s National Commission on Computing and Freedom (CNIL) threatened Google with a €300,000 fine due to the company’s lack of compliance with a June decision aimed at protecting users’ private data. The French agency that regulates information technology says Google had not satisfactorily responded to its June decision giving the company three months to be more upfront about the data it collects from users.
In a statement Friday, France’s National Commission on Computing and Freedom, known as CNIL, said:
Google hasn’t made requested changes, including specifying to users what it uses personal data for, and how long it’s held. CNIL said it will now launch formal sanction proceedings, a process that could take months.
On the other hand, Google spokesman Al Verney said:
Our privacy policy respects European law and allows us to create simpler, more effective services. We have engaged fully with CNIL throughout this process and will continue to do so going forward.”
The National Commission on Computing and Freedom said five other European countries are also taking similar steps in a staggered offensive against Google’s privacy policy between now and the end of July. It said Google has largely ignored earlier recommendations from European regulators. Similar actions are underway in Spain, Germany, Britain, Italy and Netherlands.

Report : Beats Audio To Buy Out Remaining HTC Stake For $265 Million

Reports are coming in that HTC is indeed about to sell its stake back to Beats. In 2010, HTC owned 50 percent of Beats, before selling half last year for $150 million. The remaining 25 percent has increased in price considerably since then, as the new deal will close at $265 million.
It seems that Beats has already taken on a new partner in the form of Carlyle Group, which is said to be investing $500 million into Beat’s expansion efforts.
“We are confident that Beats will continue to drive innovation and growth in the premium audio accessory market, particularly as the proliferation of smart phones and tablets stimulate increased consumption of digital media,” Sandra Horbach, a managing director at Carlyle, said in a statement.
Now that the partnership is ending, Beats is free to continue down the path of pushing its Beats audio technology into other products including in-car dashes, HP computers and – of course- its premium headphone line. For HTC, it means a pretty hefty cash infusion that can help the company can (hopefully) use to further facilitate growth and recovery after years of struggle.
Founded in 2006 by rapper Dr. Dre and Iovine, chairman of music label Interscope, Beats has come to dominate the market for pricey headphones. According to the NPD Group, Beats has grabbed more than 60 percent of the U.S. market for headphones costing more than $100. Its signature headsets retail for between $200 and $400

Google Improves Search Accuracy Via Hummingbird Update

Marking Google’s 15th birthday, the Hummingbird update was release which is the biggest change to the inner workings of the world’s most popular search engine since Google’s “Caffeine” update in 2010, which sped up Google’s indexing of sites and delivery of search results.
The Hummingbird update focuses more on Google’s Knowledge Graph – an encyclopaedia of about 570m concepts and relationships that allows Google to anticipate facts and figures you might want to know about your search term.
When you search Google it no longer just searches for individual keywords; it can now respond to questions and statements in the same way a human might, by looking at the whole query – even if it doesn’t have an exact answer.
Apart from ‘Hummingbird’, several other updates have been announced, with most aiming at providing the data more concisely to allow people not to navigate to another website to find out more – which can prove difficult on small smart phone screens.
“Remember what it was like to search in 1998? You’d sit down and boot up your bulky computer, dial up on your squawky modem, type in some keywords, and get 10 blue links to websites that had those words,” Senior vice president Amit Singhal wrote in a separate blog post.
“The world has changed so much since then: billions of people have come online, the web has grown exponentially, and now you can ask any question on the powerful little device in your pocket.”
These changes mainly affect the ‘Knowledge Graph’, a box that appears on top or alongside other search results. In particular, its new version will be able to compare the attributes of two different things. ‘Google Now’, a virtual assistant that provides for the user the information about his interests and location, will start flagging new developments – for example, in the life of a celebrity – that interest the user.

Microsoft Sets Windows 8 And 8.1 App Roaming Limit To 81

Microsoft announces that it is dramatically increasing the number of devices users are able to install apps on. At the moment there is a limit of five devices, enabling customers to install the apps they have bought on multiple devices with the same user account. While you might think that five devices is enough for most people, some developers and customers wanted more. Microsoft listened and has increased the app roaming limit. Massively.
Microsoft is upping your Windows app roaming limits to not 8, 10, or 20 devices, but instead you’ll be able to use up to 81 devices.
That’s insane. Your single Microsoft account can install apps from the Windows Store on up to 81 different devices starting October 9th.
“We believe this change will be beneficial to the app developers. On one hand, the ability to run on more devices may mean more revenue from the apps that are ad-based. On the other hand, if limiting the service that can be accessed simultaneously on devices is critical for the business model of the app, we provide a set of APIs to build a service-side verification to set that limit,” the company explained.
For free Windows apps that don’t have any revenue streams, this change will have no effect. For apps that have ads, the new policy may end up being beneficial to their developers, as users may access them on more devices.

Samsung Teases 4K OLED And Shows Off Massive 98-inch & 110-inch UHDTV'

This year at IFA Berlin, Samsung Unpacked with a new 98-inch Ultra HDTV and plans to make a 110-inch model. Samsung also hinted that it is developing the first-ever Ultra HD OLED TV. The company previously launched an 85-inch version that went on pre-order back in March and showed off an 110-inch version back at CES.

Samsung teased a 4K OLED TV, much like the products Sony and Panasonic showed off at CES back in January. But if Samsung ends up producing an Ultra HD OLED TV, then it is an even bigger deal.

Samsung also teased what it said will be the very first UHD OLED TV, but no other details were shared, and once again showed off its 55-inch Curved OLED set, which arrived in Europe last week.

Ultra HDTVs have four times as many pixels as traditional HDTVs, known as 4K resolution in the industry (4,096 x 2,160 pixels, for example).

Specifically, there was a 98-inch version of Samsung’s ultra-high definition (UHD) S9 HDTV. You can expect the 98-inch version to have a significantly larger price tag than the already outrageous $39,999, for the 85-inch model.

In total, that makes five models in Samsung’s UHD lineup: 55, 65, 85, 98, and 110-inch models. The 55 and 65-inch models received pricing, at approximately $5,270 and $7,900 respectively

Kawasaki Launches Ninja ZX-10R And ZX-14R In Indian Market

Kawasaki has launched two new Ninja’s for the Indian market. The Ninja ZX-10R and Ninja ZX-14R launched today will be available in Maharashtra for Rs 15.70 lakh and Rs 16.90 lakh respectively. Both the Ninja’s will be on sale in Maharashtra only, with more states to follow later.

These two motorbikes will come to India through a CBU (Completely Built Unit) route and will be sold through a new chain of independent dealerships that Kawasaki will establish across the country. The first such motorcycle dealership is already ready at Wakdewadi, Pune. At present Bajaj is not equipped to handle things involved in selling and servicing of these bikes.

Bookings of the motorcycles will open from tomorrow while deliveries could start from the end of September.

Ninja ZX-10R features the all-new 998cc four cylinder 1-litre petrol engine. With a 6 speed manual gearbox, this petrol engine uses fuel injection and 4 valves per cylinder to deliver 210 PS of peak power at 13,000 rpm and 114 Nm of peak torque at 10,000 rpm. Company claims a fuel economy of 17kmpl on Ninja ZX-10R. Other features on the bike include all new suspension and an all new frame. The bike also gets ABS and traction control to handle the immense performance.

Ninja ZX-14R is powered with a massive 1,441 cc four-cylinder petrol engine and delivers similar power of 210 PS, but at a lower 10,000 rpm. Torque though is a mighty 162.5 Nm, at 7,500 rpm. As the rpm levels for the peak power and torque suggest, the Ninja ZX-14R is a motorcycle that’s tuned for sports touring rather than blazing across tracks.

Kawasaki’s exclusive showroom in Wakdewadi, Pune will open on September 7. Deliveries will begin by late September.

Yahoo reveals their new logo

Sony Xperia Z1 Announced : 5" Full-HD Display, 20.7MP Camera

As expected, Sony has unveiled the follow-up to its Xperia Z smartphone today, the aptly-named Sony Xperia Z1. The device looks visually similar to its all-glass predecessor, but comes in a bit taller, wider, thicker and heavier. It has a unibody aluminum chassis.

The Sony Xperia Z1 will boast modern specs worthy of a flagship smartphone, including a 5-inch full HD 1080p display (441ppi) sporting Sony’s TRILUMINOS screen tech and X-Reality for mobile that debuted on the Xperia Z Ultra 6.4-inch phablet. There is a 2.2Ghz Snapdragon 800 SoC inside, along with 2GB of RAM. 16GB of storage (expandable via MicroSD) and a 3000mAh battery.

The 5-inch Sony Xperia Z1 sports a 20.7MP Exmor RS sensor with an unprecedented size of 1/2.3″, along with a G Lens from its higher-end cameras. Its F2.0 aperture and 27mm wide-angle lens means that photos should be sharper, faster and more detailed than most of its rivals, though we will wait until a review unit for a verdict on its efficacy.

There’s a new social feature, Social Live to broadcast “precious moments” directly to Facebook. The time Shift Burst takes about 61 images in two seconds, all photos that you take are stored online in a cloud based library.

Running Android 4.2.2 with Sony’s slight but pleasing customizations, the experience should be familiar to anyone running an updated Xpera device.

The Sony Xperia Z1 is also rated at IP55 and IP58 for water and dust resistance, similar to the Xperia Z and will come in black, white and purple variants.

Apple Patents New iOS Unlocking Features

A patent just awarded to Apple allows for a user of an iOS to lock or unlock a device based on a gesture — perhaps the equivalent of a child-proof cap.

The patent, as spotted by AppleInsider and reported by TechCrunch, would allow access to one set of apps — let’s say games for instance — with the drawing of a letter with a fingertip, and then another set, say email, with another, separate gesture.

Apple’s U.S. Patent No. 8,528,072 for a “Method, apparatus and system for access mode control of a device,” describes a system that creates user access modes guarded by predetermined gesture inputs.

Currently, as Apple Insider reports, Apple’s iOS offers passcode unlocking as a means of access control. Under this method, users must input a simple code or password to gain complete access to the device. Apple also provides a certain level of user configuration, allowing access to Siri, Passbook and Reply with Message even when a device is locked.

Such unlocking methods are definitely not new and various Android devices in the past along with custom ROMs have allowed similar functions, whereby a user can “draw” a letter or a shape to launch a specific app, such as the drawing of an envelope that would launch the email app.

This patent by Apple is also accompanied with the effective feature of “Guest Mode”. In this feature Apple will build a lock screen launcher that will easily be accessed by the user through gestures, voice, keyboard, mouse or stylus, already covered in the Apple patent.

Screenshot Of 1080p Windows Phone 8 UI Leaks

Evleaks has today added fuel to the Windows Phone GDR3 1080p HD support rumours with a leaked screenshot from the Nokia “bandit” device. The image is 1080×1920, a resolution Windows Phone does not currently support, but it’s reported to be from the Lumia 1520 “phablet”, possibly packing GDR3.

The image shared by @evleaks this morning shows a Windows Phone start screen with an extra Live Tile column than the Windows Phone 8 layout that we’re accustomed to. That extra column enables users will be able to place a large Live Tile and medium Live Tile right next to one another without issue.

The leaked screen shot also reveals what appears to be a new application called Story Teller.

It is expected that larger “Phablet” style Windows Phone devices will be released soon, with Nokia supposedly working on a device which will be called a Lumia 1520 which will have a 6 inch screen with a resolution of 1080×1920. this has apparently been codenamed “Bandit” which you can see below.

The rumour mill has suggested that Nokia is planning to hold an event on Sept. 26 that will be used to show off the Bandit as well as a new Windows RT-powered tablet. There’s no word yet on when either device might arrive on store shelves.
