HTC Exec Hints At Tablet and Smartwatch

As The Next Web is reporting, we may just know what HTC might be looking to do next; release a tablet. Chou has been speaking to The Financial Times recently and he’s hinted that a tablet is on its way.
While few details are offered, Chairwoman Wang is quoted as saying, “when the [HTC] tablet comes out it will be something nice and disruptive.” But with strong competition from many of the major consumer electronics brands, HTC, as a smaller player with fewer marketing dollars to spend, could find its tablets facing issues similar to those affecting its smartphone business.
HTC have tested the tablet waters once before with the HTC Flyer, which didn’t prove to be too popular, on account of it shipping with Android 2.3 as Honeycomb tablets were appearing on the market. However, HTC made a well-built 7-inch tablet with true pen input. Many users of the Flyer held on to it as long as they could but,Samsung came along with the Galaxy Note and offered a clearly superior device to the Flyer.
Chou also revealed for the first time that HTC collaborated with Microsoft for a smartwatch in the past, but the project was eventually scrapped. As for when will HTC attempt a new move in this space, Chou commented that wearable tech is not mature enough, calling current devices “version one” or “gimmicks” that lack style. He then went on to say that the market is relatively young and hinted that HTC will be biding their time.

Gmail And Other Google Services Now Gets New Unified Login Page

Google is rolling out a new log in screen for all its services located right at the centre of the page, unlike the previous page that appeared on the right side. Google highlights the “One account” all the Google messages, placing it right at the top of the page and displays icons of all its different services including Search, Gmail, Google Drive, YouTube, Maps, Play Store and Google+ at the bottom.
It displays the account photo and just ask for your password, in case you are logging in after a long time. Google wants more users to know that a number of services they use are offered by the Mountain View-based Internet giant, and that they just need one Google account to access them all.
They have decided to ditch the navigation bar it used to place on its websites and introduced a new menu which looks like the Chrome app launcher placed upside down. The new launcher is visually appealing and features different Google services as apps rather than offering them as hyperlinks placed on the top of the page in an omnipresent black navigation bar.

Nokia Lumia Achieved Record Sales Last Quarter

Sales of Nokia Lumia smartphones have hit a record high as Nokia gears up to release another batch of Windows Phone 8 devices. It represents the fourth consecutive quarter in which Nokia Lumia sales have hit a new peak.
According to the Wall Street Journal‘s sources, Nokia sold “at least eight million” Nokia Lumia phones between July and September. Obviously this doesn’t even approach Apple or Samsung figures, but for a Windows Phone platform that comes a distant third to iOS and Android in usage numbers it’s truly noteworthy.
It’s an improvement on the previous quarter’s record-smashing 7.4 million sales. It’s also a massive increase on the same quarter last year, during which Nokia sold only 2.9 million Lumia phones.
Nokia is expected to release as many as six new devices including the Lumia 2520, which will be the company’s first tablet, and Lumia 1520 at the Nokia World event. A Nokia smartwatch patent emerged just last week, but we don’t expect launch of this device from Nokia this time around as it may very well be in a prototype stage.
Not helping matters is the fact that Apple is expected to the launch its latest iPad on the same day, meaning that Nokia will have some seriously stiff competition as it vies for the world’s attention.
The event will also be the first big public appearance for Elop since the acquisition, which saw him emerge as a leading candidate to take over from current Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer when he goes into retirement in 2014.

Nokia Guru Leaks : A Shuffle-Like Music Player With NFC

Regular source of leaks @evleaks has posted an image of the Nokia Guru, an MP3 player which we guess will be announced at Nokia World in Abu Dhabi tomorrow.
The one major selling point of the Nokia Guru, it seems, is the inclusion of NFC, though it’s unclear what capabilities the Guru will have as a result of the technology. It’ll likely have some special connection to Nokia’s Lumia lineup, but beyond that, we’re not really sure. MP3 players are an ageing breed, but Nokia allegedly feels there’s enough life left to warrant a new product.
The Nokia Guru appears to be an A2DP Bluetooth headset with NFC capability and Windows Phone live tile styling, charging via microUSB,

While this is some leaked news, stay tuned for some official news which is just few hours away!

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 vs Galaxy Note 2

The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 was launched in India for a price of Rs. 49900 (roughly translated to “more than most can afford”) and is expected to go on sale on the 25th of September. The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 features a new design over its predecessor boasting a soft-touch, leather like back, along with many hardware changes that put it right in line with many flagships out there. But, at the price at which it has launched, should you go in for the Galaxy Note 3? or should you get the Galaxy Note 2? Here is where we break it down for you.

Aesthetics

The Note 3 is actually slimmer and thinner than the Galaxy Note 2 despite getting a larger 5.7-inch full HD 1920 x 1080p display. The Note 3 also appears to be squarish from the front and has a slightly raised bezel, as opposed to the roundish bezel on the Galaxy Note 2.

The new leather look back panel on the Note 3 definitely adds a lot more premium appeal to the previous plastic and poorly constructed look. Which however, does not change the fact that the phone is still completely plastic, now its just plastic hidden behind faux leather-appearing plastic.

Hardware Comparison

Apart from the obvious differences in the specs, the major changes on the new Note 3 worth noting are, the aforementioned Full HD display, a new Exynos 5 chipset vs Exynos 4 on the Note 2 which offers an effective 1.9 GHz on Quad cores (with full octa-core functionality by December.). You also get 3 new temperature, humidity and gesture sensors, along with an additional gigabyte of RAM.

A 16GB bump in storage capacity makes the basic variant (and the only one available in India) a 32GB variant. A slightly larger 3200 mAh battery and 13 MP camera finish off the changes on hardware. Check out a comparative below.

Software

Despite most attempts by the company, most of the new features of the Galaxy Note 3 will be available on the Galaxy Note 2. Including the new Action command feature which can be executed from the S Pen.
With not a lot of difference for the end user, one would consider going for the Note 2 as it would mostly achieve all the features that one would require from a smart phone with pen functionality.
The Galaxy Note 3 is the latest flagship from the company while the Galaxy Note 2 did really well in the past and offers most of the features for the Note 3 at a considerably low price. If you really need to get the  most for your money’s worth, the Galaxy Note 2 is still an impressive piece of hardware with a lot going on under the hood, it is still capable of handling every app in the Google Play store, and whatever you can throw at it. If the latest is what you must get, then consider spending a lot more for the newest Note 3.

Angry Birds Go! Will Be Available For Free On All Platforms Starting December 11

Love Angry Birds ? Good news for this game lover as Angry Birds Go! is the next big entry in the Angry Birds franchise. The game takes the “universe” of Angry Birds and applies it to cart racing.
As the teaser shows, players need power-ups to take their birds, pigs, and other Angry Birds characters past opponents on a variety of downhill stages. This game seems different than what we are used to see when it comes to Angry Birds, the teaser makes it further exciting. The graphics are said to be improved, but that can only be judged once this game will hit the market on december 11 on iOS, Android, Blackberry 10 and even Windows Phone 8 for free.

Worldwide PC Shipments in the Third Quarter of 2013 Declined 8.6 Percent

Global shipments of personal computers (PCs) have hit a five-year low, according to new figures from the research firm Gartner.
Shipments totalled 80.3m units in the three months to September, down 8.6% from a year ago.
PC sales have now fallen for six quarters in a row, hurt by the growing popularity of tablets and smartphones. Gartner said falling prices of tablets had further hurt sales of PCs in emerging markets.
“The third quarter is often referred to as the ‘back-to-school’ quarter for PC sales, and sales this quarter dropped to their lowest volume since 2008,” said Mikako Kitagawa, principal analyst at Gartner in a canned quote.

“Consumers’ shift from PCs to tablets for daily content consumption continued to decrease the installed base of PCs both in mature as well as in emerging markets. A greater availability of inexpensive Android tablets attracted first-time consumers in emerging markets, and as supplementary devices in mature markets.”
Lenovo is still the top dog in this dying sector with 17.6 per cent of the market, growing its sales by 2.8 per cent of the year. Lenovo’s sales slacked off slightly in its home Chinese market but grew strongly in the US to offset this.
Taiwan-based Acer and Asus, the world’s 5th and 6th largest PC makers, meanwhile, suffered a sharp fall in shipments of 22.6 and 22.5 percent on-year in the third quarter as both companies shift their focus away from PCs to other device markets

Microsoft Releases Official Remote Desktop Apps For iOS and Android

Coinciding with the release of Windows 8.1, Microsoft has unveiled Remote Desktop apps for iOS and Android.
RDM has long been a way for users to remotely access Windows desktops, whether from another computer or a mobile device. While this is Microsoft’s first foray into official iOS and Android apps for the service, other solutions from large companies like Citrix and Splashtop have adequately filled the gap for years.
What Microsoft’s remote desktop version has going for it is its price — free — and its official support of Windows 8.1, which is rolling out now. The app also supports Network Layer Authentication (NLA) which, according to Microsoft, “completes user authentication before you establish a remote desktop connection and the logon screen appears. This is a more secure authentication method that can help protect the remote computer from malicious users and malicious software.”
The app is a bit rough around the edges, according to initial reviews, lacking pinch-to-zoom and multiple desktop size support. In other words, you’ll be doing a lot of scrolling if your computer’s native resolution is much higher than your phone’s or tablet’s. Of course, you’ll have to install the host software on that PC in the first place, so the solution isn’t quite plug-and-play.

Nokia Leaks Lumia 1520, Confirms 20 MP PureView Camera and Snapdragon 800

Nokia Lumia 1520 is spinning in the rumor mills for quiet some time now, we have seen various leaks showing that Nokia will launch its first phablet device within this month.
The company’s official Tmall store -which is an online marketplace in China- recently published a product detail page for the phablet Nokia Lumia 1520. However, the page has no images of the product itself, but the listing shows the same information that we have seen in the leaks lately, 6-inch 1080p display and 20-megapixel PureView camera. The page also shows a Snapdragon 800 Chipset and the price of the device is shown as 4,999 Yuan (about 50,000 INR) price tag.

While this could just be an intentional display of the specs, just like what happened with Nexus 5 when Google accidentally placed the phone on the Play Store. Having said that, the device will supposedly launch at the Nokia World event which is held tomorrow that is 22 October 2013,
